Take a relaxing vacation, no travel required
By Gretchen A. Peck
Everyone needs a break from the fast pace of modern life. Some like to jet off to far-off lands and indulge in exotic exploration. Others prefer to spend their vacations drinking in the tales of a destination’s rich and fabled history or to become kids again at amusement parks. Still others like to tune out the world, breathe in the salt air and feel the sand beneath their toes on a favorite beach. To the work-weary, perhaps these all sound like ways to spend a hard-earned vacation.
If only time and circumstances always allowed for travel, but sometimes they’re prohibitive, making a “stay-cation” a better option. Fortunately, Greenwich affords a veritable playground of activities for adults and kids alike. Local beaches, historic sites, the bounty of parks, entertainment venues and great restaurants are all within reach. Many residents do not even need to leave their homes to enjoy family time, pastimes or get that feeling of “being away from it all.”
“This is the perfect stay-cation home,” said Bettina Hegel of 67 Sumner Road in Greenwich.
“Nestled on more than 4 picturesque acres, it offers a peaceful, private retreat and fun entertaining home. It has a wonderful open floor plan, with soaring ceilings and walls of windows, providing a dramatic and sophisticated casual elegance,” said Hegel, the Halstead Property listing agent.
“An expansive deck overlooks the lovely grounds and free-form pool and spa. One can stroll down to the lovely pond with a fountain and relax, read a book and enjoy the natural surroundings. The private tennis court includes a viewing deck.” The property is listed for $1.795 million.
The waterfront property at 10 Pilot Rock Lane is Riverside is ripe with relaxation potential, too. The five-bedroom, 7,247-squarefoot custom craftsman-style home is absolutely “stay-cation worthy,” according to its listing agent John Bates of Houlihan Lawrence. It has direct access to the water courtesy of a quarter-mile crescent- shaped beach, a negativeedg pool and spa, a “grilling-andchilling” patio, a putting green and the association’s marina. And that’s merely its outdoor amenities.
Inside, there’s a custom-built home theater, a billiards room and plenty of rooms ideal for entertaining family and friends — with five fireplaces, a gourmet kitchen, state-of-the-art sound system for playing music throughout the home and a 300- gallon saltwater reef tank for ambiance.
“When you live in one of the most beautiful communities in the country, what could be better than to stay at home and enjoy a fabulous stay-cation near your closest friends and family,” according to Sharon Kinney an agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, and partner with Margi Vorder Bruegge.
“Some of the features in a home that make for a great time in the summer are a patio for barbecues, a pool to swim and splash in, a spot in the yard to pitch a tent or build a treehouse where the kids can spend a night outdoors. A tennis court is a great feature for the athletically inclined, as are nearby walking and biking trails.”
One of Kinney’s and Vorder Bruegge’s listings is 99 Sterling Road, which is on the market for the first time in more than two decades. The six-bedroom, 6,481- square-foot home resides on more than 5 acres and has both a pool and a tennis court.
The Coldwell Banker duo are also the listing agents for 53 Hillside Road in Greenwich, a 5,217- square-foot custom-built home on 1.55 acres, which includes a private fenced-in backyard with a pool and play area. The lower level has several rooms for recreational pastimes, like foosball and pingpong.
“Don’t forget indoor spaces when planning a stay-cation,” Vorder Bruegge said. “It’s important to have a place to go to take a break from the sun and the occasional rainy day. Finished playrooms and media rooms are great venues for summer gatherings.
Disconnect from the Internet, and encourage youngsters to play old-fashioned board games and ping-pong. Or host a movie night — complete with popcorn — on a big flat screen or an in-home theater. Your air-conditioned home can be a very pleasant place to stay.”
The custom free-form pool and spa at 67 Sumner Road in Greenwich is surrounded by a stone terrace, and
offers privacy thanks to the mature landscaping. The home is on 4 acres and is listed for $1.795 million.
